David M. Governo graduated from Northeastern University School of Law in 1981. He was a partner in the toxic tort department of Burns & Levinson, a 100-plus lawyer firm in Boston. Since 1989, he has defended insurance coverage, complex products liability and toxic tort litigation as a senior partner in his own firm.
Mr. Governo has represented defendants as national coordinating counsel and trial counsel in asbestos, lead, mold, silica, indoor air quality, toxic tort and complex products liability cases. He has advised insurers, corporations, and governmental entities on both business-related and litigation-related issues, including asset preservation, underwriting and marketing, as well as local and national litigation management and strategy.
Mr. Governo has a national reputation as a leader in the fields of toxic and mass torts. In 1992, he organized and chaired the first national litigation conference on lead poisoning, Mealey’s National Lead Litigation Conference. He has been invited to present papers at many conferences throughout the country on topics that include defending mass litigation, indoor air quality, regulatory/environmental liability and insurance coverage claims. He is a member of numerous Bar associations, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, Inc. (ASHRAE), American Indoor Air Quality Council, Indoor Air Quality Association, several ASTM committees, and the Editorial Boards of Lead Detection and Abatement Contractor and Indoor Environment Connection. Mr. Governo is listed in Martindale-Hubbell’s Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers. He has co-authored text books titled Toxic Torts: Law and Science Manual (1996), Toxic Tort & Medicine Internet Directory (1997) and Toxic Tort & Medicine Internet Directory (Second Edition) (1998). The latest edition of the Internet Directory was published by the Defense Research Institute (DRI) in 1999.
