Radon gas-while invisible, odorless and tasteless-remains the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. This potentially dangerous toxin is naturally present in the ground and nearly all air, usually at very low levels. In an effort to promote public awareness and protect consumers and their homes, the Environmental Protection Agency ("EPA") has declared January is National Radon Action Month.
Testing is the only way to know if a person's home has elevated radon levels and do-it-yourself test kits are affordable and can be purchased through the mail or in many hardware stores. You can also hire a professional to perform the testing. The EPA is encouraging everyone to test for the presence of radon gas in their homes, schools and businesses.
