Lung Cancer Asbestos Cases On Rise: NY Politician Trying To Cash In

Governo Law Firm partner David Goldman was quoted in a recent article about asbestos lung cancer claims. The article, entitled "Congresswoman's Suit Marks Wave Of Asbestos Cancer Claims," discusses a lawsuit filed by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) against dozens of defendants, in which she alleges that second-hand asbestos exposure from the clothing of her boilermaker father and brother caused her lung cancer. Like many plaintiffs in asbestos cases, Rep. McCarthy is also a longtime smoker, and medical studies have conclusively shown a strong connection between smoking and lung cancer. Mr. Goldman points out that the number of lung cancer claims is increasing partly because the number of people diagnosed with mesothelioma is decreasing. Goldman also notes that "With the lung cancer cases, the defendants have a lot easier defense [because] the jury has already grown up understanding the fact that lung cancer is caused by smoking."
