Toxic Tort Alert: January is National Radon Awareness Month

Radon gas is an invisible, odorless, tasteless gas that is present in the ground and nearly all air. Everyone breathes in radon every day, usually at very low levels. However, people who inhale high levels of radon are at an increased risk of developing lung cancer. The Environmental Protection Agency's ("EPA") radon risk assessment estimates that radon found in indoor environments is the leading cause of approximately 21,000 lung cancer deaths in the U.S. each year, second only behind smoking.

Exposure to radon is preventable and testing radon levels in your home can help prevent unnecessary exposure and risk of disease. The EPA is encouraging everyone to test for the presence of radon gas in their homes, schools and businesses. Do-it-yourself test kits are affordable and can be purchased through the mail or in many hardware stores. You can also hire a professional to perform the testing.

The remediation of excessive levels of radon is well-established and cost-effective. In fact, we have used techniques developed to reduce radon exposure for the remediation of other underground environmental contaminants in the representation of our clients. Representing clients in toxic tort, indoor air quality and environmental claims is one of Governo Law Firm's core practice areas. David Governo currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of Healthy Housing Solutions and actively participates on numerous industry committees related to environmental and indoor hazards. If you would like to learn more about asbestos, mold, lead poisoning, hazardous waste or chemical exposure claims, please contact Mr. Governo at 617.737.9047 or [email protected].
